tong yang hot potHot Pot (or “shabu-shabu” ) is not the restaurant for you if you’re hungry. I’m not too keen of hot pot restaurants where a huge pot of flavored broth for cooking is placed in the center of your table. One needs patience and determination to see through the cooking process of the raw meat items you selected earlier. That’s how I remember the Tong Yang Hot Pot experience years ago. Annamanila thought of giving a blowout to Chats, another blogmate because she craved for the Hot Pot eating experience. There goes my diet, I thought. But then again, I remember that there is a wide selection of sea foods to choose from.

I chose squid, shrimps, oysters, scallops along with some red meat. There must have been more than 50 viands to choose from including vegetables.

The tricky part is the cooking . Like I said, a little patience is needed to cook your ingredients along with a splatter of oil here and there. I was already hungry as I cooked my oyster on the grill that I didn’t wait for it to be fully cooked . Our grill had low fire then and we didn’t adjust it until later. Too late, I alredy gobbled up the “raw oyster”. Well I’m still around since I am typing this. Before the cooking started, you already choose a soup of choice like chicken, spicy sate, vegetarian, sinigang, taiwan mala, chicken with chinese herb, kimchi. We chose Spicy Sate.

Tong Yang Hot Pot isn’t for you if you are hungry. It isn’t ideal for long conversations as neighboring tables can get rowdy . The noise is just too loud for comfort. And to add to that noise was the cigarette smoke emanating from the next table. Geesh, Quezon City restos are not so strict with the “No Smoking” regulation. I threatened the management that if they didn’t stop the smokers that I’d report them to the City Hall. The smokers eventually stopped.

Tong Yang Hot Pot is for you if you want a food trip though.

Hi! I read your blog and they make me hungry as always. By the way, I live here in Taiwan and hotpots are everywhere. The next time you go for shabu-shabu I suggest, seafood, shellfish, oysters, scallops or squid or fishballs are better when they’re cooked with the soup. Avoid overcooking them though. And add eggyolk to your sauce with some garlic and schopped scallions. Yummy! =)

everything look nice and i can imagine the smoke destroying the flavor of the food. what if a person cant cook and they have the raw ingredients?
