I am considering undertaking a personal experiment which, if successful, would simplify my existence considerably.
It’s nothing earthshaking or revolutionary, but will make for a very interesting year of my life. For one entire year, I will source all my material needs for goods from one, and only one, place. Obviously, my spiritual and emotional sustenance will be provided for by family and church. But for the nourishment of my earthly body and other creature comforts, I will rely on a single source. And that would be the SM Hypermarket, a Philippines Supermarket located in Pasig City.
Would it be possible to spend an entire year without buying anything except what can be found in SM Hypermarket ? I believe so. It has everything I could conceivably need, from electronic gadgets to underwear.
The rules of the experiment will be simple. Nothing can be bought outside the hypermarket, except necessary goods or services (like specific medicines) which are not on the shelves. Even those must be within easy walking distance of the hypermarket. I want a one-stop shopping experience every week for one whole year and not feel deprived or bored.
I’m from the “shopping-should-be -an-adventure” school of purchasing. There has to be something new to discover every time. Lately, my weekly trip to the grocery store has become a pleasant romp at the SM Supercenter at Tiendesitas at the corner of Ortigas Avenue and C-5 Road. Parking is spacious and free. As far as variety and novelty of goods are concerned, I have not been disappointed.
SM has created the definitive department store and supermarket combine, which is what a hypermarket is. This saves time which, for the busy urbanite, is more valuable than gold. This saves money; hypermarkets, because of their high-volume, low-margin sales, are supposed to deliver more bang for the buck.
First I check out the CDs, just to put myself in the proper mood. Then I move briskly through the appliances and furniture section to see if there are any interesting items since my last visit. Then on to the dry goods department to check out the clothes and accessories. I’m no fashionista, but there are items which to me are indispensable. For instance, I wear barongs to work and am always on the lookout for a nice piece or two to add to my wardrobe. Lo and behold, SM Hypermarket has a pretty good selection of barongs in the material and cut I like.
I then proceed to the most important purchases for the real VIPs in our home: our dog, and our two fastidious felines. Anxious owners will find an entire row of pet stuff to pamper their four-legged wards.
Shopping then begins in earnest. Its worthwhile to check out the items on sale or bundled at a special price. Bonus, the house brand, guarantees bargains all the time.
The most enjoyable areas for me are the fresh produce and the meat and seafoods section. Here is a chance to educate myself on the finer points of choosing the right ingredients for a special dish I want to prepare for the weekend. The family wants paella? Everything I need is here, from live shrimps to sausages from the deli section. Choice meat cuts are plentiful and reasonably priced, considering the freshness and quality. The frozen and processed food sections are also a must-see. There are fishballs, squidballs and other tasty morsels in a counter devoted solely to hot pot (shabu-shabu, the legit kind) ingredients. A favorite is the delectable ready-to-cook chicken pandan sold by the piece, nuggets of marinated chicken wrapped in fragrant pandan leaves.

The staff are helpful and will honestly answer your questions on the quality of the available produce. At the fruit section, I banter with the salespersons, who consider me a suki. They point out the finds of the day. Libre tikim pa on some items, just like the good old days.
There are freebies all over the place, as various food manufacturers have food-tasting promos. In a corner of the veggie section is a counter where one can get a cup of free instant coffee to perk up the flagging shopper.
There may be long queue at the check-out counters during peak shopping hours and weekends. Thoughtfully, there are “traffic-control” personnel who will direct your shopping cart to the shortest lines.

With my groaning cart of groceries, I then head for the Rotisserie to check out the ready-to-eat dishes. I usually pick up some sushi and a roast chicken, perfect for a tasty, a no-hassle meal to bring home.
Mini stalls just also sell regional Philippine delicacies and special dishes. This is for those who crave home-cooked eats like lola used to make or more exotic viands. I espied in one of the stalls a pot of stingray (pagi in the vernacular) stewed in coconut milk with chilies, a yummy spicy dish from Bicol. That I can get this rare fare at the SM Hypermarket was certainly a nice surprise.
Check out the fast-food area, Taste of Asia, where fresh seafood fare cooked to the diners’ specifications. This is where I found the tastiest Chinese lumpia outside Binondo, a treat for veggie lovers.
Did I mention donuts ? For me, shopping requires a donut or two eaten at the right time. I can start with a donut or end with a donut. SM Hypermarket has its own bakeshop stocked with freshly-baked goodies. Or head for the Go Nuts Donuts outlet.
In line with the rules, all other necessities will have to be found nearby. I can get medicines in Watson’s. For hardware and stuff for home improvement, Ace is the place. There’s even a barbershop.
What’s the point of this experiment, you say ? Well, as I mentioned I want to simplify my life. And while I’m a creature of habit, I also want adventure. I’m comfortable with routine but need new experiences. I expect SM Hypermarket to provide these and more. I’m headed there now.
Be updated and interact with SM Hypermarket through their blog.

I revisited SM Hypermarket after I read your previous entry of your SM Hypermarket experience last May . Talagang, I am going there.
Galing naman asawa mo. Mahilig pala siya mag-grocery
Did the guards stop you from taking those photos. Katawa naman, \”STALKER\” .
@Emily- really? I really enjoyed taking those photos.
@Lala- Oh yes every sunday, he does the grocery. It relieves me of that chore. hehe
@Jane- yes this time the guards stopped us but we explained we are joining a writing contest. So they let us go.
“Stalked by Noemi Lardizabal-Dado”
can’t help giggling on this one.
Free tasting of the fruits? I didn\’t know that. Is that true for all Hypermarkets?
@lady cess- haha. It’s stalking because I followed him wherever he shopped.
@Ding- not sure . Maybe because my husband is “suki” that’s why he is given a taste.
I love this post. I think its a winner of a piece on a winner of a hypermart!
Galing, Butch (as stalked by Noemi — hehehe).
@annamanila- it’s true. I stalked him. Kidding aside, Butch is the most qualified between us to write this entry. If I were the one writing it, it would look like this “and I watched my husband shop for 2 hours. ” haha
LOL @ “and i watched my husband shop for 2 hours.” hahaha
I enjoyed reading this post - it’s like a walk-through. With matching stalker of course! Interesting experiment, butch. I think i will attempt it too.
But, this is episode 2 pala? LOL, readers, you should take a look at episode 1 (the stalker followed the shopper to the parking area!)
@Chateau- eh really written from the heart of a true SM Hypermarket shopper, right? Try out his experiment. See if it works. Oh yes, Episode 2. There could be more episodes after this. Ah I also took photos till the parking lot but I didn’t want to clutter this entry with too many photos. Enjoy ba?
Butch & Noemi: I read this entry — and I got inspired. So, allow me my ruminations about Butch’s gastronomic writing.
I can’t wait to shop at this hypermarket. I had better send this blog entry to Marissa F., you know. I could relate to Butch’s shopping experience — especially since they sell food you can eat at home, and it’s gourmet Filipino food (with stingray? Now, that’s exquisite and exotic!).
Here in the US, the closest hypermarket experience for me is actually in Chicagoland (the term for Chicago suburbs) at Meijer, a family-owned and operated grocery and general merchandise retailer operating stores throughout the Midwest. http://www.Meijer.com. Talagang value, better than Walmart, with extensive supermarket and department store finds at incredibly low prices.
In San Francisco, space is such a premium that I have to shop at several places. I’ve taken Lauren to my favorite Trader Joe’s, best known for its private-labelled organic produce and its very popular food sampling area. I’ve shopped at Trader Joe’s since 1990 (my first purchase was a package of calamata figs at their Thousand Oaks, CA store). I believe Lauren enjoyed her shopping trip because I taught her how to cook my favorite couscous dish delicately flavored with miso soup mix, and dotted with toasted pine nuts. I think I also introduced her to Spanakopita (phyllo dough, feta cheese, spinach mixture). I am such a fan of Trader Joe’s that I shop there every other day. Originally branded as yuppie food, it’s increasing its clientele base since they truly have better pricing for some items (compared to Safeway Supermarket, across the street, where I shop for staples). http://www.traderjoes.com.
My late mother-in-law (who was a gourmet chef, had studied at Le Cordon Bleu in Paris and with Marcella Hazan in Italy) had introduced me to Whole Foods (www.wholefoodsmarket.com) and Central Market (www.centralmarket.com) in Austin, Texas. These are two places that are high up on my shopping destinations in an ideal situation since they truly offer fresh, and mostly organic food. Whole Foods is too far away for me in the South of Market! I’ve given up on going to Costco Wholesale because it’s too much for two people’s budget.
When you come back to San Francisco, I’ll take you on my personal 1-1/2 mile walking tour of North Beach (a great tour for a foodie!) — and perhaps, the neighboring Chinatown, where we can eat at the famous, no-reservations, long-queued House of Nanking on Kearney Street, by Columbus Avenue. So you’ll see naman where I buy my favorite proscuitto, one of the world’s best truffles (French chef-husband with Filipina-entrepreneur wife), the neighborhood’s focaccia bread, the truly awesome Sacripantina cake that’s to-die-for, among the many. I’m such a foodie! Now, I’m hungry.
Hopefully, SM HyperMarket will decide to be a leader in organically-raised food. Slightly more expensive but definitely worth it!
Butch, do check out one of my published articles from 2004: (copy and paste) http://radiantview.com/blog/2006/12/04/a-busy-couple%e2%80%99s-inter-cultural-kitchen-adventures-2/
I’m looking forward to your kitchen adventures and experiences. Better yet, you and my hubby can cook for us, ladies.
Praises to your writing talent, Butch. I can actually hear you talk to me (too bad it’s not in Harley Davidson bike language :D).
sis-in-law,
Lorna
Oh my goodness! Written like a true lawyer
ang bagsik sa detalye at prueba! This entry is a winner in my book. Dapat pala mag shopping buddies ang mga asawa natin. If they had both written the entry - isang buong hapon sila sa Hypermart. LOL Hope you guys win
@ ah did his entry compel you to shop at Hypermarket? Well when you come to Manila, we can all go shopping. I haven’t really shopped in any of the US supermarket. Maybe next time when I am there
@Cathy- yes they should be shopping buddies . Oh well , we can just hope to win !
Wow. This is a winner. Very exhaustive entry indeed. It shows practically everything that can be found in this shopping center. And Butch’s reference to simplifying his life thru SM Hypermarket - ang galing! Who doesn’t want to simplify life in this complex world? Now, I want to check out SM Hypermarket on my next visit to Manila. Oopss.. siguro, kailangan, truck ang dadalhin kong sasakyan. hehehe.
@rhodora- you can visit the Frontera branch (where Tiendesitas is located) . Haha truck. Sige.
Best piece I’ve read (not that I’ve read many) and a very original concept too. Good luck!
It’s a well written article and I like how you incorporated those photos. Congrats to your husband. Very deserving. The Stalked by line is very amuzing.
