
As I enter Abe restaurant, I notice some words written on the ceiling which defines the meaning of “Abe”. Capampangan Abe (A-Beh) means “friend”. It was also a nickname of E Aguilar Cruz, noted writer, painter and bon vivant. Born in 1915 in Magalang, Pampanga he educated himself and became one of the best loved intellectuals of his time. He wrote important essays on food, art and history and inspired many young people. A true gourmand, he knew food and wine and the best places to enjoy them.

I sit at my appointed reserved table and am doubly pleased that I am not in the middle of the noon time crowd. I bring out my laptop and smile to myself as I spy a retro typewriter beside my table.
