As I enter Abe restaurant, I notice some words written on the ceiling which defines the meaning of “Abe”. Capampangan Abe (A-Beh) means “friend”. It was also a nickname of E Aguilar Cruz, noted writer, painter and bon vivant. Born in 1915 in Magalang, Pampanga he educated himself and became one of the best loved intellectuals of his time. He wrote important essays on food, art and history and inspired many young people. A true gourmand, he knew food and wine and the best places to enjoy them.

I sit at my appointed reserved table and am doubly pleased that I am not in the middle of the noon time crowd. I bring out my laptop and smile to myself as I spy a retro typewriter beside my table.

My mother-in-law and ex sister-in-law are supposed to arrive anytime soon but they are still nowhere in sight. Thanks to the free wi-fi in Serendra, I amused myself by surfing online. Finally they arrive with a troop of other family members. Our table is much too small for a group of 8 persons but the restaurant is already full. While waiting for a spare table we ordered our food. Fortunately, a table was ready when our order arrived.

Pastel de Lengua (P295.00,. ox tongue with its tasty pie crust topping).

I just had to order a Tamarind Shake (110 pesos) to match the rest of the food.

The food is just as yummy as the retro interiors. One must really reserve ahead of time as it can get packed even on a weekday.

am not really as fan of filipino food that is expensive.. like guava, bistro filipino.. for me the best pinoy dishes are he ones done at home… am willing to try anything once though… is the food here different form Bistro Remedios?
I loved Abe! This was a real treat. I haven’t been back to the Phils in almost 7 years and my cousins took me to have dinner when I arrived. While we were waiting for other family members to arrive we sat watching what other customers were ordering. The Family across from us had ordered the Tilapia, Bamboo Rice and other dishes. After seeing all this we too decided to order the same dishes along with the lamb adobo, kare-kare and Pastel de Lengua. The Lamb adobo was thee best adobo I ever had. Never thought of trying it with Lamb. The Bamboo rice was great too. (It took a long time for it to arrive but it was well worth the wait) The Tilapia was fried just right. I was tricked into having the Pastel de Lengua. I didnt order it. My cousin just had it passed around and once I started eating it everyone waiting till I was finished to let me know that it was Ox Tongue. Had I not been told I would have thought it to be just beef.
The entire night was great spending time with my family and having great food. Being newly married I’m planning my next trip back and will be taking my new husband with me to Abe for sure.
