Fruits: A Filipino New Year Tradition

Monday Dec 31, 2007

fruits

Filipinos borrow many traditions from the Chinese, and the idea of letting go of bad luck/bad spirits and ushering in good luck for the coming new year is the overall theme for Filipino New Year celebrations. Come late December, fruit vendors set up their stalls in more convenient locations so that people can get easier access to round fruits. You see, preparing 13 different kinds of round fruits (apples, watermelons, oranges, kiwi, etc) during New Year’s Eve is said to bring good luck and prosperity to the family for the coming year. Why 13 round fruits, you ask? 13 is a lucky number to the Chinese, and the fruits’ round shape resembles coins. Hence, wealth and prosperity. Eating 12 grapes at the stroke of midnight (one for each month of the year) is also said to bring wealth and luck.

hot chocolate for noche buena

One of my favorite Christmas drinks is the Starbucks Peppermint Mocha and I was feeling a little experimental on Christmas eve. I figured that I could replicate the minty flavor in my cup of hot tsokolate by crushing a candy cane and mixing it into my drink.

Filipino-American Noche Buena

pinoy noche buena in America

Just because you’re miles away from home, doesn’t mean you can’t have your favorite Filipino treats for your Noche Buena. My relatives from Hercules, California sent us pictures of their Christmas dinner and it looks to me like their menu was even more Filipino than ours.

Filipino Christmas Day Lunch

Thursday Dec 27, 2007

filipino foods

We don’t normally serve a lot of food during Noche Buena because there’s always more dishes to stuff ourselves with during lunch with our relatives on Christmas day. (Well everyone, that is, except for those in the family who are vegetarians or allergic to seafood.)

Pinoy Noche Buena

Tuesday Dec 25, 2007

The Noche Buena meal usually takes place as soon as the entire family comes back from the late evening mass at their parish. We attended the 10 pm mass last night but we spent the hours before church preparing our meal, which consisted of pansit bam-i (Bisayan style), chunky chicken macaroni salad, Majestic ham, and suman for dessert.

Dolor’s Kakanin

Monday Dec 24, 2007

Dolor’s Kakanin is perhaps the best commercial kakanin you can find in urban Metro Manila. Their flagship branch is located in Malabon and apparently, Dolor’s is so popular among the residents that it’s customary for them to give Dolor’s kakanin as presents to friends and family outside the Malabon area. After trying their rich, assorted kakanin, I now wish I had friends in Malabon so I could get some more whenever I see them! Dolor’s kakanin is available in three different bilao sizes: 190 pesos at 11 inches, 170 pesos at 10 inches, and 140 pesos at 8 inches. I wish the box came with a description of what each kakanin is called, though. The purple one is ube of course, but I have no idea what the rest are. That doesn’t make the sticky rice cakes any less capable of satisfying your sweet tooth though!
