hot chocolate for noche buena

One of my favorite Christmas drinks is the Starbucks Peppermint Mocha and I was feeling a little experimental on Christmas eve. I figured that I could replicate the minty flavor in my cup of hot tsokolate by crushing a candy cane and mixing it into my drink.

Only there were a few problems with that plan. First off, our mortar and pestle smelled like garlic and onions so I had to place the candy cane in a sandwich bag and use the butt end of the mortar to crush it. Now if you can imagine how awkward that is, you’ll understand why I couldn’t crush the candy cane pieces as finely as I wanted it.  Also, the hot chocolate cooled down too quickly and couldn’t melt the candy cane bits very well.  But after adding more candy cane (about half a small candy cane to a cup) and condensed milk, it started to have a minty flavor.
I’m no expert but I suppose the trick here is to make sure that the candy cane is crushed til it’s practically powder, and then dissolve it in the tsokolate while it’s still pipping hot.
