I discovered this quaint little restaurant a street away from the studio where my band and I rehearse in Mandaluyong City. Lime 88 is on the front lawn of a sixties-style bungalow painted with bright colors and decorated with batik and fiber lamps to give the place a cozy, summer feel. Their signboard promises Filipino street food with a twist, and one glance at the menu will tell you that this is definitely a place that offers intriguing dishes. Appetizers include balut in red wine sauce, oysters, quail egg tempura (otherwise known as kwek-kwek), and fried maki among others; for the main course you have popular Pinoy dishes like chicken adobo flakes and embutido.

I was pretty hungry that evening so I had the osso-bucco style beef kare kare (pictured above). What really impressed me, besides the rich flavor, large serving, and affordable price (Php 190), was the dish’s unique presentation. You don’t normally get that kind of food arrangement in your typical streetside neighborhood restaurant! And dishes that look like that normally cost Php 300 upwards. I wanted to take photos of my friends’ chicken adobo flakes, which were arranged in a circle with a cup of rice in the middle, but my camera had run out of batteries by then.
