Sometimes, you just have to go out of your way for the best coffee and dessert in town. Kohikan is the Diamond Hotel’s coffee shop, well-renowned for their award-winning ensaymada and rich, brewed-by-hand coffee made from organic coffee beans. Kohikan coffee blends are uniquely different from the Starbucks variety. There’s the Sumibi, their best-selling brew with an unforgettable aroma and distinct, bold and bitter flavor. If you like your coffee mild, the Kageboshi blend is roasted with coffee fruits to give you that natural, semi-sweet flavor. Finally, there’s the Emerald Mountain, made out of nothing but top quality beans with a twist of sourness and mildness.

Only the best dessert can complement great tasting coffee, and there’s no shortage of mouth-watering cakes at Kohikan. I wanted to try out their famous supermoist chocolate cake but since the hotel had no slices available, I got the next most chocolatey thing on the menu. A gataeu cake is a French cake with alternating layers of chiffon and chocolate. If you think that slice looks too small to satisfy your sugar fix, think again; the cake is so rich and gooey, it feels like you’re eating an entire melted block of chocolate instead of a cake. After I had a couple of bites, I couldn’t take another one. That doesn’t make it any less delicious, of course, but you might want to share it with a sugar-toothed friend, especially if you’ve had a filling meal beforehand.
