Whenever I travel to other countries, there are two things that I MUST try out no matter what: their local cigarettes and their best beer. Unfortunately I don’t have the money to go around the world sampling beer and cigarettes. Hell, I haven’t even been to Europe yet. European beers are available in specialty bars in Makati but not only are they a little too expensive for my tastes; they’re also populated with expatriates and the last thing I want to be mistaken for is a mail order bride waiting for her white husband. It’s a good thing that along with the best karaoke experience in the city, you can now enjoy some of the world’s best beers at Red Box.

Now you might be wondering, what in the world is a karaoke place doing serving fancy beer? To begin with, Red Box is far from the ordinary karaoke bar. It’s a chic place where music lovers, gamers, food connoisseurs – and now beer lovers – can come together to kick back and relax after work or on weekends. Thanks to the expertise of the renowned Chef Philip John Golding, Red Box’s patrons can experience not just international beer brands. At Beer Appreciation Night, Chef Golding taught us that like wine, different kinds of beer go well with different food.

Heineken’s full flavor and soft aftertaste goes great with Red Box’s German Gottingen sausages. Beck, on the other hand, is another Pilsner from Germany but it’s got a slightly bitter, wheaty flavor that is complemented by crispy pata and bite-sized baguettes. Next on the list is Japan’s most prominent beers, Kirin. Made only from premium hops and the finest malt, this Pilsner beer has a luxurious flavor that goes great with fish and chips with Wasabi and vinegar sauce. I’m not a big fish person; in fact I avoid eating it because I dread the fishy aftertaste. But I discovered, to my pleasant surprise, that Red Box’s fish and chips are tasty, flavorful, and not the least bit fishy. Then we have Budweiser from the USA, a sweet lager that makes an ideal pair with buffalo wings and spicy chili sauce. Finally, we’ve got beers from Belgium. Stella Artois is the country’s leading beer and has a clean, crisp flavor that is best enjoyed with a bacon, lettuce and tomato sandwich. My favorite beer among the ones offered was Hoegaarden Witbier, a Pilsner seasoned with coriander and a mellow, almost citrus taste. Drinking it felt a lot like drinking white wine, and its fruity flavor became more pronounced when I ate it with baked mussels and cheese.

Before the night was over, Chef Golding taught us the do’s and don’ts of beer drinking. Apparently, there is a right way to drink beer and I’ve been doing it all wrong since I discovered the awesomeness of this drink. When judging beer, pay attention to its color, aroma, foam, and aftertaste. Beer should be served ice-cold at 3 or 6 degrees Celsius but you should NEVER put ice on the beer itself. And while it might look cooler to drink it straight from the bottle, the proper way to drink beer is to pour it into a glass.Red Box has branches in Greenbelt 3 and Trinoma.
