pancake sandwich from Jollibee

The Jollibee pancake sandwich has been around for quite a while, and I’m surprised that a lot of people haven’t heard of it yet. And those who have heard of it don’t quite like how it tastes. I first tried the pancake sandwich over a year ago, when I was still in college and would hang out at the Starbucks in Katipunan Avenue in between classes. Since I’d be too cheap to get anything from Starbucks, I’d skip off to the Jollibee next door and grab my breakfast there. The pancake sandwich was an accidental discovery.

The Jollibee pancake sandwich is their answer to McDonalds’ breakfast McMuffins. Instead of bread, however, the sausage pattie and scrambled egg is sandwiched by two tiny pancakes. You bite into it and eat like you would a normal sandwich.

I think the problem most people have with the pancake sandwich is that the idea of combining pancakes and a sausage into one sandwich sounds a little strange. Pancakes are usually eaten with syrup and butter, and I suppose they can’t wrap their minds around the idea of eating a pancake dry together with something salty. Some people also don’t like eating something sweet and something salty at the same time. I love my pancakes with syrup, and I find that the sweetness has a sharper taste when paired with something salty, like bacon.

I wasn’t sure of what to make of the pancake sandwich when I first tried it. To my pleasant surprise, the slight sweetness of the pancakes and the saltiness of the sausage pattie was a great combination of complementing flavors. It also made for a filling breakfast - well, if you’re the type who doesn’t have much of an appetite in the morning.

The Jollibee pancake sandwhich costs around Php 52 with cheese and is available up until 11 am.
