Last month, I was bitching about how ultra-trendy fast food restaurant Pepper Lunch failed to live up to the hype of “cooking your own food.” It’s a shame, because that was pretty much the most interesting thing about the place; otherwise, it’s basically your standard, run-off-the-mill steakhouse where food is served twice as fast and costs thrice as much.

If what you want in a restaurant is the novelty of cooking your own food to suit your tastes, then I highly suggest that you make a trip to Healthy Shabu Shabu.

One of the highlights of the Carnation and Appetite Magazine’s Family Food Trip 2008 was to meet the elusive William “Billy” King. I’ve heard so many good things about Billy King. From 1990 to 2002 he was at the helm of the Le Soufflé restaurants as its executive chef. Unfortunately, Billy King did not make an appearance at any of the meals he prepared for the media.
Though not present, I already had an idea about his cooking. Chef Billy King describes his way of cooking as “Clean and neo classic.” Bloggers and media got a feast of some milk-based dishes prepared by the renowed chef.

Dine and I get ready for our dinner
The array of the dishes looked very tempting as we took photos of them.

Here is a sampling of some of the dishes.

Even before I received the invite to join the Carnation Family Food Trip tour, Carnation Milk has always been my milk brand choice when I use milk to prepare white sauce or any milk-based dish. And why not? My favorite cookbook is Let’s Cook with Nora by Nora Daza. For some reason, she always puts Carnation Milk when indicating the milk ingredient. After experimenting with Nora Daza’s recipe, the Carnation Milk brand has been ingrained in me for the past 30 years.
The idea of a Carnation Food Trip was definitely going to be one big food adventure.

The Carnation and Appetite Magazine’s Family Food Trip 2008 was an out-of-town two-day jaunt which brought together and transported 60 delegates, composed of press, guests, bloggers and representative from Appetite and Carnation to Northern Luzon for them to have a taste of specially concocted milk-based dishes from up north.

Part of the Carnation Family Food trip in cooperation with Appetite Magazine was the Grand Handaan at the Burnham Park held July 26 at around 1:00PM. Despite the rainy and chilly weather, the Grand Handaan still pushed through. Instead on the grassy park, the booths were moved to the Burnham Park stage.

Aside from the food bloggers and writers of various publications , 10-Baguio based winning families via a radio promotion and the Baguio society people also took part of these festivities.

I like the idea of food exhibits where the various delicacies or dishes can be sampled.

I was just so full from the scrumptious lunch prepared by Chef Billy King at the Camp John Hay Manor that I couldn’t take part of this “Grand Handaan”. I just watched the families as they enjoyed the feast. They managed to sample dished from Vigan, La Union, Ilocos Norte, Ilocs Sur, Pangasinan, Benguet, Pampanga and Bulcan.

When choosing a Filipino restaurant to eat at, the Aristocrat Restaurant is probably going to be among the first places that will come to mind. It’s easy to see why The Aristocrat has endured for decades; their classic favorites like crispy pata and sinigang are unforgettable, and they also serve new dishes that cater to the fickle palates of modern-day Filipino diners.

The Aristocrat Restaurant’s specialty is their famous Chicken Barbecue. Served with a steaming, tasty cup of yellow java rice and seasoned with a thick peanut sauce, it’s no surprise that this dish alone keeps sending regular patrons back in droves for more.

One of the best teas I’ve ever had in my life was a concoction made by Master Tea Blender David de Candia at the Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf’s Tea Appreciation Workshop several months ago. I was taken aback by how flavorful it was and I thought it’d make the perfect present for my tea-drinking friends. Unfortunately, that delicious tea brew wasn’t for sale then, and we didn’t know when it would be out in the market until very recently.
Yesterday, The Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf (CBTL) finally launched what I think is the best tea they’ve come up with - African Sunrise.

It might not look like it, but the University of the Philippines Diliman campus is a haven of affordable, restaurant-quality cuisine. In the Shopping Center alone (near the UP Chapel and the infirmary), establishments like Rodic’s have been serving signature dishes (tapsilog) for decades - and they’re still a big hit among students today. Filipino food isn’t the only kind available in the Shopping Center, though. One of the newer restaurants is called Mashita and as you can guess by the name, they specialize in Japanese and Korean dishes.
