People in the Philippines don’t normally rave about locally-made chocolate, probably because when you make a colonial-minded comparison to their foreign counterparts, the texture and flavor of the local ones would come off a little strange. Recently, however, I’ve been hearing a lot of wonderful things about Goya Dark Mint Chocolates from my friends in Twitter and Plurk. Since I go to convenience stores quite often, I did notice that Goya repackaged their sweets and created a high-end line of milk, white, and dark chocolate bars - which I love. But I’ve never seen any of these mythical dark mint chocolates around. Though I was told that you can find them at Mini Stop, I’ve never encountered so much as a shadow of a dark mint in the branches I’ve been to. I was starting to think that maybe the Goya Dark Mint Chocolates didn’t exist after all, until I finally chanced upon them at a Robinson’s supermarket on the way to the shampoo aisle.

Mint chocolates are my second favorite kind of chocolate in the world (the first is white chocolate) and I was beyond happy to discover that Goya Dark Mint Chocolates lived up to the hype. It’s smooth, creamy, and I love how the mint left this tingling sensation when it traveled down my throat. Thank God I had the foresight to grab two other boxes. I don’t understand why Goya Dark Mints aren’t widely distributed, or why Goya didn’t launch a huge ad campaign when they released their high end line of chocolates. These are definitely one of the best locally-made, mass-produced goodies on the market and they should be more accessible to the general public.
I’m told that Goya Dark Mint Chocolates cost around Php 30 -35 at Mini Stop, but I got mine for Php 25 at Robinsons’ Supermarket.

We just had that for “dessert” today. Its PhP25 in Cherry Foodarama. Seems like people don’t buy that because the stacks are always full compared to the other imported brands.
