It might not look like it, but the University of the Philippines Diliman campus is a haven of affordable, restaurant-quality cuisine. In the Shopping Center alone (near the UP Chapel and the infirmary), establishments like Rodic’s have been serving signature dishes (tapsilog) for decades - and they’re still a big hit among students today. Filipino food isn’t the only kind available in the Shopping Center, though. One of the newer restaurants is called Mashita and as you can guess by the name, they specialize in Japanese and Korean dishes.

You can expect to spend less than 150 pesos for a full meal in Mashitta (actually, 150 pesos would already be rather expensive).

An order of five pieces of gyoza (fried dumplings) costs around 40 pesos. (You’d probably pay twice as much for that in a restaurant at the mall.)

A steaming, satisfying bowl of shrimp tempura ramen costs around 120 pesos. Despite the really low price, they didn’t scrimp on the shrimp or the other ingredients at all!
I’m not a big fan of Korean food so I didn’t get around to ordering any. (I think Korean food tastes…strange.) But if the quality is as great as the Japanese food I had, you can probably try it out yourself and let me know what you think. ![]()

I’ll be seeking Japanese food this time. Recently, I ate at Kublai Khan’s Mongolian Restaurant here in Cebu. And I love inventing my own mixes! Exciting. My lates entry on thi is at:
