My dad wanted to have his birthday dinner at Serendra, where my grandparents were staying at their condo, and we ended up eating at Polu Kai Grill (across Abe and right next to Marta’s Cakes). I liked the place immediately for two reasons: 1) it was really refreshing to be in an environment that evoked memories of the beach during late August and 2) Polu Kai is probably the least pretentious restaurant in the area. Imagine a Hawaiian-themed Dencio’s - that’s pretty much what Polu Kai Grill feels like.

We started off our meal with nachos and thick four-cheese dip. The chips were deliciously crunchy and the dip was so rich, we had to ask for another order! It didn’t come cheap though; one order costs around Php 300.

My main course was a shrimp-bacon kebab served on top of rice flavored with a spice I can’t remember (I think it was saffron?). I was happy with my meal as the shrimp was really large and completely wrapped in bacon.

One of my aunts ordered the fish and chips. I’m not a big fan of fish but I really enjoyed this one; the fish fillet was very crunchy and came with very fat french fries.

My sister ordered the giant squid (I wonder if it came from a real giant squid?) and she loved it so much that she asked me to try it. The squid was very soft and chewy, and was made even tastier by the sauce that came with it.

For dessert, we all shared the complimentary lava cake Polu Kai serves to all birthday celebrants. :)

if it’s expressing admiration or praise: it’s complImentary not complEmentary.

and that ‘fat french fries’ in fish and chips are called, well, chips! while the ‘chips’ in nachos are really nachos, hence, the name.

one more thing, lose that ‘?’ at the end of your wonderment. It’s an indirect question and as such, doesn’t need a question mark.

all that said, i’m such a big fan of your website. so please don’t feel offended or anything like that. i’m just playing :)

    peace and more power!!!

I had lunch there a couple of weeks ago. It was my 2nd time. Opted for the giant squid. Not long after I bit into a piece, a chemical taste oozed out of it. I asked a friend to try it to confirm that it had a “funny” taste. He spat the piece out and said it tasted a lot like formaline. It could be something they injected to the squid to help it retain its fluffiness and it’s common practice in restos. They took it back and apologized profusely. Gave us free dessert. But the thought of formaline made me sick. :(
