My mom was doing some clothes shopping at Landmark Trinoma today and after I had looked around myself (without buying anything - I’m such a cheapskate!), it occurred to me that I haven’t had a thing to eat all day. As I was walking around the ladies’ clothes section, I spotted a Cafe Via Mare and decided to grab some coffee and a light snack.

I intended to get a bibingka to go with my coffee but I ended up getting a bowl of arroz caldo instead, which to my meager appetite isn’t a snack but a meal in itself. I’m a huge sucker for soupy dishes of all sorts, and when I saw a photo of the arroz caldo in the menu I couldn’t resist. The Via Mare arroz caldo comes in either chicken or goto, but the premium one - the Lugaw Toppings - has both plus fried dumplings, crispy tofu strips, shredded beef, crunchy garlic, and salted egg. The Lugaw Toppings came in a very large bowl, half of which I devoured immediately because I was pretty hungry. It tasted wonderful too - not too bland, not too salty - and the range of toppings included in the arroz caldo made eating the dish a lot more interesting. As for the other half, I had to ask my mom to help me out because I had gotten pretty full.
The Lugaw Toppings at Cafe Via Mare costs Php 170 while the chicken and goto versions cost Php 130.

that looks delicious, if not a bit pricey.
i haven’t tried this at cafe via mare but this one looks good!

I always get a quick dose of Via Mare’s arroz caldo for sentimental reasons–it reminds me of an aunt’s recipe. Best with an order of ginumis
Otherwise, any arroz caldo at a tenth of the price in the streets od Quiapo and Baclaran will do just fine for me.
