Filipino Parties in America

Last night, I attended a party in Seattle Washington hosted by the Filipino community. I wasn’t sure what I was expecting but when I saw what was on the menu, the last thing I expected was to feel as if I never left the Philippines at all. How strange. I thought that we would be served a fanfare of Western food but I guess the Filipinos miss home so much that they recreated an entire Filipino party meal (well, minus sweet spaghetti and hotdogs with marshmallows).

For dinner, we had the choice between pancit guisado, lumpia shanghai, bistek, embotido, and chop suey.

Even the dessert was very Filipino - squares of leche flan.

It’s really quite strange how back in the Philippines, we usually serve our guests foreign food like paella and pasta and reserve typical Filipino dishes for more informal gatherings. Whereas across the Pacific ocean, the opposite takes place. Maybe being Filipino is more strongly felt the farther you are away from home.

You are so right. Which is why we serve steaks to family and friends from Manila who visit us here in the US. I’m sure they can get better Pinoy food back home so we let them taste western food instead ;) Enjoy your stay in Seattle. Looking forward to hear about your stay and see pictures. See you in Plurk, too!
