Mexicans and even Filipinos are known as party animals. When I found out that “Pachanga” means to party, I just knew that La Pachanga Mexican Restaurant in suburban Missouri would be one of my favorite restaurants in my US tour. What I found fascinating is that everything seemed very authentic from the Mexican waiters to the carved chairs and the festive ambiance. There were many customers at that time when my brother and his wife brought me out for lunch. It seemed the college crowds was there. Students get a 10-percent discount on Sundays while lunch prices drop down an extra $2 off most of La Pachanga’s most popular dishes. No wonder the restaurant was crowded.
La Pachanga offers a vast array of the typical Mexican dishes- tacos, enchiladas, quesadillas , burrito, roll-your-own corn tortilla tacos with fresh guacamole or a genuine chalupa or gordita. I ordered a shrimp burrito because red meat is now removed from my diet. While waiting for my order, they offered free chips and salsa. The salsa carried a delightful zest of cilantro. I simply loved it.

I didn’t really want to attend the Wine and Raclette buffet because I avoid going out at night. Curiosity got the best of me because I heard Astralis just opened three weeks ago. Not only that, Astralis is operated under Diamond Hotel, known to offer exquisite dishes. . From the same names behind Diamond Hotel, this new epicurean landmark in the chic Rockwell area offers wine connoisseurs a venue to satiate their taste for this classy intoxication.
I didn’t want to start off with wine so I ordered their tea drink. Later on I discovered that this rich dish called raclette is typically accompanied by a warm drink or wine.

I’ve been in San Francisco exactly a week and I realized that I haven’t had a single bowl of clam chowder ever since I got here. I used to have an aunt who lived a couple of blocks away from Fisherman’s Wharf and I suppose that’s why I usually associate San Francisco with clam chowder. During my last visit here I’d go to the wharf every morning and have a bowl of clam chowder for breakfast. I didn’t get sick of it at all, but I got pretty fat after eating too much of it.
So today my boyfriend and I went to Fisherman’s Wharf for a bowl of clam chowder. I know Fisherman’s Wharf is such a gross touristy place but I couldn’t help it, I wanted by clam chowder by the bay. And we took the whole tourist thing to the next level and ate at Boudin’s, which is supposedly the first restaurant in the Fisherman’s Wharf area to sell clam chowder.
Actually, Boudin’s specializes in making sourdough bread – a hard, European-style loaf of bread that the city is known for. Their most popular dish is clam chowder in a sourdough bread bowl, but they also have a bakeshop area where they sell all sorts of breads and baked goods.
I really love the turtle-shaped sourdough bread to the left!
A bowl of clam chowder in sourdough bread cost $6.99 on the menu. But plus tax it costs around $7.50. The clam chowder was excellent – the flavor just exploded in my mouth during the first spoonful. And I was so hungry (I hadn’t had lunch and barely ate breakfast) that for the first time, I ate almost the entire bread bowl too!
There was way too little clam chowder for my liking though. I had to go across the street for more clam chowder, which sells for $4.50 a cup. It’s not as tasty as the clam chowder at Boudin’s, but it’s very good as well – and I think it gives more value for your money too!
