Did you know that Sabrosa, Portugal is the birthplace of explorer, Fernão de Magalhães., better known to the world as Ferdinand Magellan? Well, I didn’t know until I got a breakfast invite to discover a new Magellan– Sabrosa’s new Fernão Magalhães wine or the Magellan Wine.

Jose (Manuel Carvalho) Marques, mayor of Sabrosa, Portugal introduced the Sabrosa Magellan wine at breakfast in Casino Español de Manila today.

I got to taste the Magellan wine which is just “good to serve with lapu-lapu fish”. And for Mayor Marques, it is his first time to taste the “lapu-lapu” fish. Oh the irony! Magellan and Lapu-lapu being feasted in a happier occasion.

Mayor Marques will also visit Mactan and Magellan’s Cross in Cebu, planted by Sabrosa’s most famous son on the island to commemorate the first Christian baptisms in the Philippines after his arrival in 1521. A replica of the Cross is hoped to be built in Sabrosa, in preparation for the 500th anniversary of Magellan’s arrival in the Philippines in March 2021.
Basically, the fine mayor just wants to promote his quaint and lovely town.
Sabrosa is a municipality in the district of Vila Real in northern Portugal which is set among the vineyards above the River Duoro, by Pinhão where the world’s best Port wine are produced. 15th century houses, including Magellan’s, and Roman remains are Sabrosa’s wealth. Visiting Sabrosa won’t be complete without the tour to Mateus Palace and Luso-Roman rock temple.
