I’ve been in San Francisco exactly a week and I realized that I haven’t had a single bowl of clam chowder ever since I got here. I used to have an aunt who lived a couple of blocks away from Fisherman’s Wharf and I suppose that’s why I usually associate San Francisco with clam chowder. During my last visit here I’d go to the wharf every morning and have a bowl of clam chowder for breakfast. I didn’t get sick of it at all, but I got pretty fat after eating too much of it.

So today my boyfriend and I went to Fisherman’s Wharf for a bowl of clam chowder. I know Fisherman’s Wharf is such a gross touristy place but I couldn’t help it, I wanted by clam chowder by the bay. And we took the whole tourist thing to the next level and ate at Boudin’s, which is supposedly the first restaurant in the Fisherman’s Wharf area to sell clam chowder.

Actually, Boudin’s specializes in making sourdough bread – a hard, European-style loaf of bread that the city is known for. Their most popular dish is clam chowder in a sourdough bread bowl, but they also have a bakeshop area where they sell all sorts of breads and baked goods.

I really love the turtle-shaped sourdough bread to the left!

A bowl of clam chowder in sourdough bread cost $6.99 on the menu. But plus tax it costs around $7.50. The clam chowder was excellent – the flavor just exploded in my mouth during the first spoonful. And I was so hungry (I hadn’t had lunch and barely ate breakfast) that for the first time, I ate almost the entire bread bowl too!

There was way too little clam chowder for my liking though. I had to go across the street for more clam chowder, which sells for $4.50 a cup. It’s not as tasty as the clam chowder at Boudin’s, but it’s very good as well – and I think it gives more value for your money too!
