My friends and I spent our weekend on a crazy road trip around South Luzon. First stop: Tagaytay, which we reached at around 9 pm because we had only decided to go on the road trip late that afternoon. After checking in at the gorgeous 8 Suites Hotel, we realized that we hadn’t eaten anything since leaving Manila. I was particularly insistent on having bulalo for dinner, a clear beef soup that gets its rich flavor from the bone marrow of the beef shank. Bulalo is a specialty of Tagaytay but oddly enough, we had absolutely no idea where we could find this famous bulalo – or at least, we didn’t know which restaurants were renowned for serving bulalo.

We left the hotel and drove down the national highway, with one person keeping an eye out for restaurant signs and another one connecting to the internet on an iPhone. A Google search said that there is a restaurant called Greenats that serves bulalo 24-hours a day but we couldn’t find any information about where it was located. Eventually, somebody spotted a sign for Leslie’s, a restaurant in Tagaytay famous for their menu of Filipino food. I was too hungry to take photos of the place, but the restaurant resembles a nipa hut and has an open area where I’m sure had a nice view of Taal Lake and the volcano.

After what seemed like forever, our order of special bulalo (around P500) finally arrived! It wasn’t as hot as I would have liked it to be, and the cold Tagaytay winds didn’t really help keep it warm. But the the soup felt like explosions of flavor in my mouth, especially when I seasoned my bowl with calamansi.

We also had an entire deep fried chicken to go with our bulalo.

And a fruit platter for dessert!

Leslie’s Restaurant can be found along the national highway (the main road of Tagaytay, also called Aguinaldo Highway), in Silang, West Tagaytay. For reservations and inquiries, call them at (046) 413-1065.

I don’t know whats all the fuss about the bulalo in Leslie’s in Tagaytay. Meat is too thick that there is no more flavor, the soup is bland and tastes just like salt and pepper, finally it costs you an arm and a leg! Some turo-turo in Tagaytay has better bulalo. Live a little and explore other not so well-known eatery.
