Bigby’s Cafe & Restaurant at the Atrium, SM Megamall

Sunday Jan 25, 2009

Eating, for me, is a social event, and what makes a dining experience particularly memorable is when you can share your food with your friends, family, your lover, or whoever it is you’re eating with. For this reason, I prefer eating at restaurants that have huge servings. The only problem is that most of these restaurants have really pricey menus – but not Bigby’s Cafe and Restaurant at SM Megamall Atrium.

Bigby’s reminds me of T.G.I. Friday’s in so many ways – the souvenir kitsch on the walls, the worldly menu, and the overall friendly atmosphere of the place. Unlike Friday’s, however, Bigby’s is proudly homegrown. An enterprising young couple named Herick Yu and Joanna Yu opened the very first Bigby’s at Cagayan de Oro in 1998, a year when people began to shy away from fine dining and preferred restaurants that served big meals at affordable prices. The restaurant was a hit among the locals not only because of their generous portions; Bigby’s is a family-friendly place that hosted a lot of reunions and parties. Despite the Asian financial crisis, Bigby’s continued to expand – they eventually opened two more branches in Cagayan de Oro, two branches in Bacolod City, two braches in Davao City, and two branches in Cebu City. And right before the end of 2008, Bigby’s came to Luzon and opened in Manila.

Comfort Food

Tuesday Jan 20, 2009

Fe Arriola defines “comfort food” as “something that you crave when you’re looking to be whole, healed, or loved.” Often, comfort food is something that reminds you of home, your childhood, or good memories. One of the things I like to nibble on when I’m feeling down is a classic snack from the 1980’s – guess what it is!

Wendy’s Baconator

Tuesday Jan 13, 2009

Wendy’s is one of those fast food chains that isn’t really known for anything, except maybe for being the only fast food restaurant with a salad bar. But after this month, I think the word “Wendy’s” will always signify the concept, “BACONATOR”. Now what in the world could a Baconator be?

This, my friends, is a Baconator – a Wendy’s burger containing two square-shaped 4 oz beef patties, two slices of cheese, six strips of bacon, ketchup, and mayonnaise. Everyone on my Plurk timeline has been talking about the Baconator and today, my friends and I finally got around to ordering some for dinner. What the people on my Plurk timeline failed to mention, however, is that an actual Wendy’s Baconator doesn’t look as classy nor as appetizing as the press release photos. Chomping down on a Baconator has been one of the most…interesting culinary experiences of my life.

Decadent Chocolate Cake at Jack’s Loft

Monday Jan 12, 2009

After riding around Eastwood on a Shockwave yesterday, my friends and I grabbed a table between Pho Hoa and Jack’s Loft for dinner, dessert, and drinks. Apparently if you sit in between restaurants outdoors, you can save yourself the trouble of getting up and transferring to another location for post-dinner drinks. Human beings are a lazy race.

I wasn’t in the mood for beer that night, but I did want to finish off my amazing pho bo ko with dessert. And I just happened to remember that the last time I was at Jack’s Loft, I ordered what is arguably the most delicious chocolate cake I have ever had in my life.

The Miele Guide to Asia’s Finest Restaurants

Friday Jan 9, 2009

Asia is a very diverse region and Asian cuisine is one of the best and most popular around the world. The sad part about it is that Asia’s best chefs and restaurants don’t receive the recognition they deserve. But all this changed after The Miele Guide to Asia’s Finest Restaurants was released on October 30, 2007. If you’ve always wanted a definitive guide to the best restaurants in Asia written by nothing less than Asia’s best food writers and restaurant critics, then this is the book for you.
