Fe Arriola defines “comfort food” as “something that you crave when you’re looking to be whole, healed, or loved.” Often, comfort food is something that reminds you of home, your childhood, or good memories. One of the things I like to nibble on when I’m feeling down is a classic snack from the 1980’s – guess what it is!

My mom didn’t let me and my sister eat a lot of junk food when we were kids but every now and then, our next door neighbors (relatives of ours) would let us have our pick from the corner sari-sari store. I’d always get Coke and a bag of Chiz Curls – light, puffy, cheese-flavored corn snacks shaped like little Cs. I used to watch a whole lot of TV back then and I can still remember how the commercial went. Well, one of the lines of the jingle anyway. “Cheesy Chiz Curls, you’re my favorite cheesy treat!”

Now that I’m an adult and can eat all the junk food I want, I don’t actually get to chow on a whole lot of Chiz Curls. In fact, I don’t eat a lot of junk food because of all the sodium it contains. But today was just one of those days when the adverse effects of fake food can take a backseat to feeling better by giving in to an old childhood favorite.
