Last weekend was spent surfing at San Juan, La Union with my boyfriend and friends. You know how restaurants at tourist areas capitalize on hapless vacationers by charging an arm, and a leg, and a pound of flesh for sub-par food? I expected to spend a lot on food over the weekend but surprisingly, the food at San Juan was reasonably priced, especially this diner with big servings and low prices that my boyfriend kept raving about.

Located between the towns of San Juan and San Fernando is one of La Union’s best kept dining secrets. Midway Grill is an American-style diner that serves all-day breakfast meals, local favorites like sisig, and Western fare like burgers and pasta.

My boyfriend tells me that he always orders the Midway Slam: a man’s meal of two pancakes, two eggs, and a choice of two slices of ham, two strips of bacon, or two sausages. Not bad for P149!

The restaurant smelled like burger patties when I walked in, so I got myself a Midway Burger Supreme – an 85-peso quarter pounder that did not disappoint in terms of taste and size. The quarter pounder patty is sandwiched between two slices of cheese, and is topped with bacon, lettuce, and tomato. I loved how the cheese melted and stuck to the patty!

For dessert: a heavenly Oreo and brownie split that I shared with my boyfriend because I didn’t want to get (too) fat.

I enjoyed the food at Midway so much that I insisted that we have brunch there the next day! I wanted to eat something more chi chi to make up for the pigging out I did the previous day, but the Midway American Slam looked too good to resist. This one is a breakfast meal of two scrambled eggs, two strips of bacon, two sausages, hash browns, and toast. All this for only P119!

My boyfriend ended up having the chi chi-er dish between the two of us. For a change he picked something different and went for the Ultimate Omelette: a three-egg omelette stuffed with toasted mushrooms, ham, bacon, red and green peppers, diced tomatoes, and topped with cheese. It comes served with toast and hash browns too. The Ultimate Omelette was as little disappointing because it had more tomatoes and peppers than meat; I could tell that my boyfriend kind of wished he stuck to the Midway Slam instead.

Midway Grill is located at the Anez Bldg., Carlatan, City of San Fernando. To get there from San Juan, just hop on a jeep that goes to San Fernando; Midway should be on your right in about ten minutes.
