Balaw-Balaw Restaurant is one of Angono’s more famous pit stops, probably because of its unusual array of exotic dishes like soup no. 5 (balls and butt of cow), uok (larvae of beetle cooked as adobo or steamed in tamarind fruit and tomatoes), and rose petal tempura (rose petal leaves dipped in butter and deep-fried). But don’t let this intimidating menu scare you off. Balaw-Balaw Restaurant also caters to the less adventurous and serves delicious local delicacies.

They also have an art gallery with the works of local artists on display.
It’s been over 21 years since Butch, my husband and I visited Balaw-Balaw. We used to go to this restaurant a lot of times when we used to live near Angono. In fact, Marielle had her baptismal party here over 21 years ago. Butch felt like a trip down memory lane. In fact, he wanted to check out the art work of the Angono artist but before we ventured out, we first had lunch.

The table setting at Balaw-Balaw Restaurant is very simple, unpretentious, and unmistakably Filipino.

We had a plate of Balaw-Balaw rice, a house specialty featuring seafood, chorizo, and vegetables served on banana leaves.

Our viands were made up of laing, inihaw na pusit, and lechong kawali.

To add more variety to our lunch, we ordered a side dish of ensalada – a salad made of chopped kamatis and onions.

For dessert, we had a large cup of guinumis – gelatin sago with pinipig and coconut milk. It cost only P60, which is a lot cheaper than the icy desserts we can find back in Metro Manila.

Gayuma, made up of grenadine balls and coconut milk soaked in pandan juice also cost P60. It was too sweet though that I poured water every now and then to dilute the sweetness.

And Bucoroco, young coconut with halo-halo and ice cream, was only P115. I like how the coconut juice was blended in with ice and a few fruit ingredients. Sweetness was just right.

Mrs. Perdigon, the owner of Balaw Balaw, personally checks on the diners to see how they like their food.
