The text message from Crisela was “The Coffee Bean” at the Shangrila Plaza Mall. I vaguely remembered a coffee shop beside Cravings on the 4th level (5th?) so I went up the escalators to look for it. Upon seeing the signage “Coffee Beanery” , I knew right away it wasn’t The Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf that I often go. It didn’t deter me to check out their cakes and drinks after I was assured that there was no other “Coffee Bean” in the mall.
The Cashew-Durian cake (priced at 95 pesos a slice) piqued my curiousity. I love anything durian, even the fruit. The prices of the drinks seemed reasonable. I ordered the calamansi-mint for 40 pesos. I love how they presented me with my order. So zen-like. Minutes later, Crisela arrived. She apologized that the text meant to say “Coffee Beanery”.

Desserts are always pretty and yummy to start with. The child in me is always in awe whenever I see plates and plates of dessert. If I had my way, I’d take a pick of all the sweetness in this dessert buffet that Diamond Hotel is offering. I have known all the time that Diamond Hotel is one of Manila’s dessert Mecca where sweet excess and wild abandon are forgiven. One of my favorite all-time desserts are their mouth-watering ensaymada.
If you’ve always wondered what it would be like to work as a professional chef but aren’t entirely sure if you’d like to be fully committed to it, there’s a way you can test out the waters without having to enroll in culinary school. The Center for Culinary Arts (CCA), Manila bridges the gap between the curious kitchen enthusiast and the food service and hospitality industry with their Kitchen Discovery Class (KDC). The Kitchen Discovery Class is a one-day, six-hour class where you can learn the basics of cooking and baking through lectures, cooking demos, and hands-on work. The class takes place in a commercial kitchen and simulates what it would be like for you to work in an actual restaurant setting. Besides giving you an idea of what being part of the food service industry might be like, you might also discover a thing or two about yourself, like I did during my Kitchen Discovery Class experience.
The Kitchen Discovery Class costs Php 3,800 and includes a certificate of completion, ingredients for all recipes, a copy of the recipes, a CCA apron, a CCA T-shirt, a CCA skull cap, and a side towel. There are only around fifteen slots per class, so visit the CCA website and register in advance.
I always thought that Chelsea was a restaurant, and I was surprised to see that it’s also a funky combination of a gourmet food market, coffee shop, bakery with bread and pastries, and a popular hangout. The place is called Chelsea because it’s inspired by a one-stop culinary center in Manhattan. The New York Chelsea is basically a haven for food lovers and makers, and the Manila Chelsea replicates this unique experience here in the Philippines.
