Fast-food chain Jollibee is such an iconic part of Filipino culture, and it’s good to know that they take steps to make life a little brighter for the people who patronize them. Jollibee’s fifteen-year old toy and book donation drive is bringing the joy of Christmas to over 35 schools in typhoon-affected areas in Benguet, Laguna, Zambales, Pangasinan, and Metro Manila. Called MaAga ang Pasko, the campaign has been spearheaded by local celebrity Aga Mulach for the past several years. So far, nearly 40,000 toys and books have been collected since the 2009 drive started. I often asked my daughter who was then a teen 5 years ago if they dance the way their parents danced. It is not the same as it was in the seventies when parties were limited to homes. There were no clubs or events place to dance. But do most teenagers believe in values and clean fun? Today, I witnessed this at Jollibee’s biggest and hippest surprise to date where Filipino teens, joined by their families and friends, expressed their resounding “yes”.
There I was on the second floor at the SM Mall of Asia watching 300 teens, together with yuppies, kids and even their lolas as they converged for a four-minute dance explosion celebrating the youth’s langhap-sarap life. Inspired by Jollibee Yumburger, a favorite of many teens for its real value and good-to-the-core deliciousness, the spectacle was choreographed by Whiplash and directed by noted film, TV and music video director Mark Reyes.
