World’s Best Beers at Red Box Karaoke

Friday Apr 4, 2008

beers at red box karaoke
Whenever I travel to other countries, there are two things that I MUST try out no matter what: their local cigarettes and their best beer. Unfortunately I don’t have the money to go around the world sampling beer and cigarettes. Hell, I haven’t even been to Europe yet. European beers are available in specialty bars in Makati but not only are they a little too expensive for my tastes; they’re also populated with expatriates and the last thing I want to be mistaken for is a mail order bride waiting for her white husband. It’s a good thing that along with the best karaoke experience in the city, you can now enjoy some of the world’s best beers at Red Box. Read the rest of this entry »

Delifrance Spiked after 5 Coffee

Saturday Feb 23, 2008

There are a lot of ways for you to drink your coffee: You can drink it with a little bit of milk; you can have it short, sweet and with a lot of kick; or you can take it naughty.

Take it from the man who invented the Irish Cream Coffee after his plane bound for the US had to turn back due to bad weather. In his quest to sneak in a little rotgut into his drink, he sweetened coffee with sugar, spiked it with Irish whiskey, topped it with lightly whipped cream and the first steaming cup of java jolt was born.

This exciting twist to enjoying a cup of coffee is of course, dependent on the right mix of flavor and spike. A sprightly Mexican coffee calls for Kahlua or Tia Maria, while a rich cup of Italian joe will likely call for a healthy serving of Amaretto, Frangelico or Sambuca. And Irish Coffee certainly, deserves a dash of Irish Whiskey.

For the most part however, Filipino coffee aficionados had to settle with spiking their cups with rum or whichever moonshine they happened to come across; until the Euro-continental expertise of Delifrance translated its gastronomic savvy into an exciting line of spiked coffee. And guess what, they’re doing it for FREE via the new after-five experience with a twist: Spiked after 5.

Coke Zero

Tuesday Feb 19, 2008

Coke Zero

Coke Zero is the Coca-Cola Company’s version of the Pepsi Max, a zero-calorie/sugar drink aimed at male teenagers and young adults who think that “diet” Coke is for girls.  It just hit the Philippines a little over a week ago, claiming to taste just like regular Coke minus the sugar content.  In that sense Coke Zero disappoints because it doesn’t differ from from Diet Coke – or any other diet cola drink for that matter – in terms of color, taste, fizz, or caffeine hit.  What gives regular Coke its distinct flavor is the sugar itself, and I don’t think any sugarless concoction can replace that.

Bottom line – if you want to eat food that tastes great, be prepared to pack in all those extra calories.  The most delicious treats are the ones that add extra poundage you don’t need.

Peppermint Hot Chocolate

hot chocolate for noche buena

One of my favorite Christmas drinks is the Starbucks Peppermint Mocha and I was feeling a little experimental on Christmas eve. I figured that I could replicate the minty flavor in my cup of hot tsokolate by crushing a candy cane and mixing it into my drink.
