
I can’t believe that my last feature on the
Salcedo weekend market was in the latter part of 2008. I usually update the Salcedo market every year. Using my iPhone camera (sorry for low quality photos), I explored Salcedo Market once again on this bright saturday morning. Salcedo Market is a haven for a semi-vegetarian like me and though I didn’t expect to find anything spectacular, it’s quite a feast to see variety of dishes.
I notice some stalls are still around: the crepes, the french cuisine, the sauces, the lechon.
First thing I buy is organic chunky peanut butter for 170 pesos ( or was it 180 pesos). Peanut butter is a favorite with my two girls. My nutritionist often tells me to snack my bread with peanut butter so this is a first in my list.
Pasta sauces or dips is always a favorite. I got the labahita and quesong puti sauces after getting a taste.

I like it when stores get innovative and present time-honored Filipino treats in unfamiliar ways. BibingKinitan is a small bakery that specializes in – can you guess? – bibingka, and there are two things that make them different from other stores that sell this yummy rice cake. First, their bibingka comes in mini sizes not bigger than an adult hand, which means it’s a lot easier to bring home as pasalubong or eat while on the go.

Secondly, BibingKinitan offers different toppings that you can put on your bibingka, among which are strawberry, blueberry, and caramel.

In Manila, the word “bibingka” is associated with Ferino’s Bibingka. It is even said that Ferino’s Bibingka is the best-known version of the rice cake in Metro Manila, next to Via Mare. I have not tasted Ferino’s Bibingka till yesterday when my husband and I dropped by Market! Market! at the Global City, Taguig City. He was craving for dessert and thought bibingka would assuage his sweet cravings.
